Mercy James has been the adopted daughter of Madonna for a few days now and it appears she’s already getting used to the celebrity lifestyle. She arrived from Malawi to London on a private jet. She has a nanny, a nurse, and Madge’s assistant on call. And her new favorite item in her nursery is a $3,300 rocking horse.
It’s official, Madonna’s new daughter has been delivered in Material Girl style. Three-year-old Mercy James was delivered to her adoptive mother in London after a flight on a private jet from Malawi. Little ‘Mercy’ is the second child the 50-year-old pop star has adopted from Malawi, and the fourth child for the now single mom.
For those of you who have tried to adopt a child in the United States, you know that it can cost thousands of dollars, an amount few can afford. But it’s chump change compared to Madonna’s adoption of Mercy James, a Malwaian girl. Madonna’s adoption was just approved by the Malawi government and how much does it cost to adopt a baby from a father crying outrage and a country that doesn’t want it to happen? A mere $19 million.

With a baby boom in Hollywood, it makes you wonder which of the celebrity moms out there are the biggest power players. Forbes recently ranked all of the celebrity moms in Hollywood according to their estimated earning from their 2008 movies, album sales, salaries and income from endorsement and licensing deals. Sure these famous faces struggle with balancing motherhood and work like rest of us mere mortals, but they definitely don’t have to budget child care, healthy cooking, and insane nurseries. The Forbes list is based on estimated earnings of Hollywood mothers with at least one child.
Madonna isn’t the only A-lister to be denied an adoption from a foreign country. Last week, Hollywood ‘It’ couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie hit a roadblock in their bid to adopt a baby from the strict authorities in Burma (Myanmar). Rather than take up residence in the small country–the way Madonna apparently is–the Academy Award nominated duo are planning to add another member to their rainbow family from the Philippines.
Madonna’s failed bid to adopt a 3-year-old girl named Mercy James from Malawi has left everyone involved in the situation ‘devastated.’ Also said to be struggling with the adoption denial is Madonna’s oldest child, Lourdes, 12. Lola, as she’s called, accompanied her mom on the missin for Mercy alongside her Malawian-born, adopted brother, David, 3.
A Malawian court has turned down Madonna’s request to adopt three-year-old Chifundo “Mercy” James. This despite the fact that the singer already has one Malawian child in her care. The judge said that he denied the adoption because the pop Queen has failed to fulfill a requirement ordering prospective adoptive parents to be residents of Malawi for at least 18 months.
Madonna Defies Criticism, Vows to Continue Adopting Baby Mercy James in Malawi, Adoption Ruling Delayed
A Malawi court delayed until this Friday a ruling on Madonna’s attempt to adopt a second child from the African country. The decision came the same day as a press conference in the capital city, Lilongwe, by a group of non-governmental organizations accusing Madonna of using her wealth and influence to fast-track the adoption process; one official called her a “bully.” After her visit to the Malawian courtroom, the pop star visited the day care center built by her charity. She was accompanied by her 12-year-old daughter Lourdes, 8-year-old son Rocco, and 3-year-old Malawian son David, whose adoption Madonna finalized last year.
Madonna did not get her adoption approved. The singer, 50, spent about an hour in court Monday morning in the Malawi capital of Lilongwe, where a judge delayed ruling on her application to adopt a second Malawian child, 3-year-old Mercy James, until Friday. (The child’s name was listed on Monday’s court docket.) Court official Thomson Ligowe would not reveal any other information. The 4-year-old would have been a sister for David, whose adoption by the U.S. pop star aroused controversy, and comes from the same orphanage.
Michael Jackson is ready to make a splash in England and perhaps adopt a baby? While staying in Britain for his sell-out concerts this summer, Michael Jackson making plans to adopt a child, reports say. He’s already plays dad to three kids, Prince Michael I and Paris, from his marriage to Deborah Rowe, and Prince Michael II, aka Blanket. Madonna wants the 3-year-old son she adopted from Africa to have a brother or sister from his home country. The 50-year-old singer adopted little David Banda from a Malawi orphanage in 2006 and now said she is considering adopting a second child from the country. Only a court can decide whether Madonna can adopt a second child from Malawi, the government said on Wednesday, after the star revealed she was thinking of finding a new sibling for her adopted son David.
