Breastfeeding Waitress Fired, Restaurant Fined
Marina Chavez was working in Acosta Tacos restaurant and breastfeeding her baby during her breaks, and was fired for doing so. Jesus Acosta, owner of the establishment has now been fined more than $46,000 as a result by the Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which found Acosta liable for “sex descrimination, retaliation adn failure to prevent discrimination.”

Female infanticide has been a problem in India for decades. Girls are prejudiced against largely because of the dowry system and inheritance practices tilted in favour of men. The consequences of favoring baby boys has been to account for as many as 50 million Indian women having ‘gone missing’ according to Unicef. Last year, parents were given cash rewards of 50,000 rupees (about $250) for each new baby girl they had and the result was more girls born in Delhi than boys for the first time.
