Levi Fox’s nursery is modern, fresh and not too babyish! His parents wanted something calming but also fun for a kid to grow up in and chose the silvery grey and blue color scheme for a calming effect for their baby boy.

It was personalized with letters to spell his name, purchased at Urban Outfitters.

The metal fox was made by Levi’s dad! He works in a metal fabrication shop and cut out this special piece of art for Levi.

The family are big Disney fans and made sure to pick up a few things for Levi when they stopped by Disneyland when mom was pregnant with Levi.

The soothing and serene nursery room is completed with two toned paint and molding, as well as chevron striped curtains, also from Urban Outfitters.

For Jenna’s daughter Arie Grace’s she intended to reuse as many of her existing furniture pieces as possible. In the beginning she created an inspiration board, full of all the items she could move around her house. “My husband and I didn’t find out gender prior to our baby’s birth so we wanted to keep a relatively neutral palette.  I decided to keep the walls a nice warm color and the main furniture pieces white so they can easily transition to other rooms if needed.  I found the artwork above the crib online and I love that it brought in some great colors.  I drew the coral color out of the artwork with the rug and then used some greens and blue from the piece to accent the room.”

Focusing on keeping the base layer of the room neutral, Jenna punched it up with some fun accents.  The art piece above the crib provided the perfect jumping off point for bright greens and corals. “My favorite piece in the room is the rug.  The circle breaks up all the hard lines and provides a cozy spot for the kids to play.”

Upon entering the nursery visitors see the crib.  The room is on the main level of her home and guests walk by it when they use their guest bath.  “I love that when you peek in the door you see the crib and clearly know that our little lady lives there.”

For Jenna what really brings the room to life is the small accent which show the true personality of the space.  ”I love the four artwork prints above the changing table.  I found the frames at my parents house and spray painted them and added printed paper from Papersource.  They whole project only cost about $10 and adds a ton of charm to that wall.  I also love the quirky and playful elements you can add in a child’s room.  The lamp base and the hook on the wall is an owl and the bright color and pattern of the rug make it feel so cheery.

For a festive accessory, check out the Christmas tree with little disco balls which Jenna took down in January, but might leave up all year round. May we suggest adding baby ornaments to it?!

Most moms-to-be don’t have their nursery done before the second trimester is over, but Jenn is a planner and couldn’t wait to finish baby Mason’s nursery room. She’s also a self-professed decorating “freak”. “I just love having everything all set and ready to go just in case the little mister wants to come early!

“A lot of people have asked me what my “inspiration” was for the nursery. I love the color turquoise and boy or girl I really wanted to use that color. After finding out Mason would be a boy, I immediately was drawn to the lime and yellow accents for his room. I wanted something bright and cheerful but also chic and sophisticated.”

She also knew she wanted to paint a mural for baby number two.  “I really do like how it came out! I had seen a decal of these trees on Etsy and thought to myself “I can do that!” I’m actually glad I painted them instead of getting the decal… After putting on a couple decals I think the painting was the easier route! Although, the act of painting them was definitely a labor of love.”

On Jenn’s back is a tattoo of a family of birds. She got the first two love birds when she was just 17 and dating her husband. When Parker was born, she added a little blue bird to the family and fully intends to add little Mason’s blue bird as well after he arrives. Since she loves birds so much, she couldn’t think of a better way to showcase something she loves dearly into her son’s room.

“I never shop in just one place, I like to pull items from a variety of places to create a room when I decorate. I think this is my favorite part – shopping around in different stores and online and finding things I love that I think will look great together. A lot of things I found this time around were on Etsy.

“I must say I am really happy with how the nursery turned out! I feel like I will be able to spend hours in there and not get tired of the decor. It’s simple but colorful and cheerful, a really great combination!” Now all she needs is her sweet little Mason to complete the nursery.

When photographer and mom-to-be Vanessa was first dreaming up her daughter Adalie’s nursery, she wanted to create a relaxing and feminine space for her nursery room.

“I picked some of my favorite colors Aqua, Grey, Yellow and Metallic Gold to start with.”

The penguin theme came into play because originally we were going to spell Adalie’s name with an e like “Adelie” which is also a type of penguin.  The meaning of Adalie is “God is my refuge; noble one”, so it’s pretty perfect for our baby girl.”

Vanessa started with a collection of vintage, thrifted gold mirrors she had been storing and saving for elegant use. “I didn’t know why I was collecting them, but now I’m glad I did.”

She added a crib with a grey and white chevron pattern and clean lines to make the nursery more modern in contrast to the vintage mirrors.

“I think the mix of modern and vintage came together really well in her room and created a perfect balance.”

To keep her mind off the wait in her last weeks of pregnancy, she worked on a lot of DIY crafts for her room. “The ribbon mobile and love pillow were both things I wanted to buy on Etsy and ended up making myself instead.”

“I can’t wait to bring Adalie home and spend a lot of time with her in this nursery!”

Jessica had so much fun redecorating the nursery for her third little girl #3 and poured every last bit of second trimester energy she had into it.She was secretly glad she didn’t have to paint the walls a more boy-ish color! “My personal design style is kind of random. I repurpose a lot of thrift store items in my décor, and like a vintage,  clean lined, look. This nursery is more bright and fun than how I would decorate my living room, but a kids room seems to give you chance to go a little bit over the top.” Being her third chance to decorate a room for baby, Jessica felt like made bolder decorating choices in her room decorating, like the window cornice and ombre dresser this time around. And with knowledge and experience, she DIY’d most of the room!

The wall color of the room has been the same since Jessica moved into her house four years ago and she still loves it. The furniture was all used with her previous kids, which meant she spent around $300 to redecorate. She chose the yellow and coral to go along with the soft teal because those are her favorite colors of the moment, and they’re girly without being too girly. She complimented the colors with fabrics from Fabric Worm in the mod basics organic line.

Jessica created her own crib bedding herself.  “The ruffled crib skirt and herringbone quilt were the most work, of course…but I love to sew so it was quite enjoyable for me! The hardest part was picking out the fabric for each piece. I still want to make a few more gauze blankets and burp cloths….but we’ll see if I get around to that. I made a new changing pad cover and bought some wire baskets for the changing table storage. Charlotte’s diapers are enormous compared to the newborn sized ones! Which I don’t have any of yet…soon I’ll need to start stocking up, huh?

“My favorite details are the vintage earrings that I used to clip up photos on her photo board. They add a unique touch and hint of glamour! I also am in love with the little thrifted glass bowl on her dresser that I filled with teeny headbands and clips.I made the window cornice box from a huge piece of insulation foam I got at Lowes, using this tutorial! I covered it in white linen and pinned some butter yellow ric rac from Ribbon Retreat around the top and bottom to outline it. I LOVE love love how this turned out.”

Jessica really outdid herself with DIY elements that she placed around the room. To bring in a hot air balloon theme, she created a custom hot air balloon and cloud mobile, as well as a 3d art piece where the balloons float towards you. Uunique embroidery hoop art made the walls pop and brought in the colors of the room. She made the window cornice out of foam, tape, and fabric, and sewed a scalloped fabric garland.

“I think it’s important to have meaningful items in such a special room. I have a special silver frame on the dresser that I’ve had displayed in all my girls nurseries, and I can’t wait to add a picture of this newest one to it! There is also a little white toy box that all my girls have used in the space as well. It corrals books and stuffed animals very nicely! I knew I wanted to have my dad create an oversized monogram to hang on the wall, so that meant we had to have a name picked out ahead of time-something we’d never done before. It turns out we could only agree on one name, so it was actually pretty easy once we tackled that!

The end result is a happy and cheerful room for Jessica’s baby that can be easily transitioned into a big girl room. “Don’t be afraid to try making aspects of the nursery yourself!” Jessica advises “You can save a lot of money that way, and in the future, brag to your child about how you made their first (fill in the blank) by hand!” Thanks for sharing your baby girl’s beautiful room with us Jessica!

For her daughter Mia’s elegant nursery room, Joselyn was inspired by the beautiful pale hues in the nursery galleries on restoration hardware baby & child website. “I love pink, but I didn’t want bright busy colors and prints all over the room, which is why I thought grey would be a perfect contrast.” The result was an elegant and beautiful interpretation of a baby girl nursery.

Stencil painting works great and more inexpensive than wallpaper! See how it stands out on the wall behind the beautiful white canopy crib. “I also knew I didn’t want a theme per say, but love damask and swirly patterns, and simple but elegant look. All combined this was the end result!”

To add dimension to the room, Joselyn added a chair rail and molding to the room.

Butterflies flutter up the wall of Mia’s nursery by her changing table. We adore the mirror above the changing table which adds a touch of glamour to the room.

“Start with the color swatches and start with a few dramatic pieces,” advises Joselyn to other moms.

“From there just pick items you absolutely love while keeping room uncluttered and functional!”

Little Eliza lives in a room that’s a hoot. Her pink and green nursery rhyme nursery features owls everywhere you look. Cherry of By Cherry Photography took some pictures of this newborn cutie in her decorated nursery room. Her crib side table lamp has an owl perched on a branch and the mobile she stares at as she drifts to sleep has owls say hoo!

Along with owls, nursery rhyme touches can be found in the little mice and little lambs that make her smile.

Soft feminine touches finish out her nursery room. From pink framed butterflies on the wall to the pink baby cowboy boots on the dresser, this is going to be a girl with wild style.

Not only does baby Eliza love the owls in her room, she even has a yarn owl hat that’s just so cute!

When Maggie started preparing for the birth of her little boy, she knew right away that we wanted the nursery to be different. “Our decorating style in general is eclectic and mismatched so it was our goal from the beginning to make the nursery feel warm and inviting and not too baby. We also knew that we wanted it to be gender neutral. We want our kiddos close together and I can’t justify redecorating each time we have a baby.” She decided to go with a gender neutral color scheme for Baird, with lots of coral red, blue, green, white, and of course splashes of other color.

“My best advice to any expectant parent who is trying to decorate their nursery is to not be too matchy matchy. Look for things that inspire you and that you think are beautiful and put them in the room.Mixing and matching is what gives a room character.” The crib is a Jenny Lind that Maggie purchased off of craigslist for $40. It was originally stained mahogany and she painted it a pretty shade of coral. “The bedding was all made by my wonderful mother and mother-in-law. I picked out all of the fabrics and found a pattern at hobby lobby.”

The changing table is an antique dresser which was from her in-laws. She thought about painting it but decided that the original color wood added character and warmth to the room. The pillows on the couch were also made with the fabric from the bedding.

“The rocker is one of my favorite pieces in the room because it was my granddads’. It was originally green, yellow and brown and it was dated. It was in my mom’s room growing up. We had it recovered in the blue and white striped fabric and I just love the way it turned out. I love that my mom had it in her room growing up. My grandparents were so special to me so knowing that it was a piece of their life and their history is special.”

The window treatments are paint drop cloths from Lowes. “I used a stencil to give it a little detail and used the coral paint again. All of the artwork in the room are things that I printed offline. We absolutely love the way the room came together and for the past 16 months Baird has seemed to love it as well.”

“Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose. So many of the things in our nursery are repurposed. When you repurpose you can save a lot of money. We bought the crib off of craigslist, we used the couch that was previously in our sunroom, the rocker was from my grandparents, the changing table from my in-laws… you get the picture. Use things that you have a love and heck when you need something, go buy something you love.”

Landon’s nursery used to be black and white when he was born, but his mom Veronica got bored of things easily of the simple look and decided to change things up a little bit. “What’s better than decorating your baby’s room to give it a brand new look?”

Veronica was inspired by this nautical themed nursery room and wanted to translate the theme for Landon’s. “We live in Nova Scotia Canada where you can find a lot of nautical theme decoration stuff.  So I spend a month to finish this project and I’m in love with it!”

Symbols of the sea are everywhere in Landon’s sail away with me room. We especially love the boat-shaped bookshelf on the wall and the sea shell covered lighthouse!

On Landon’s door is a hanger featuring a sail boat, lighthouse and anchor, complete with sailing rope and shells.

Of course, Landon had to make an appearance himself with pictures from his newborn photography session.

Her favorite nursery details are the blue lamp shade and the seashell decoration on the wall.  ”I made the lamp shade myself to give the room a pop of color and all the sea shells just remind me of the ocean.”

“Keep your nursery color simple and and neutral, just add a little bit color to make the room POP!”

Look up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane! No, it’s Jennifer’s son’s super hero themed nursery room!

The week before baby boy’s due date was when Jen started drawing and painting his room. “The day we started he decided to come. The room wasn’t finished until a month after he was born.”

Instead of focusing on one super hero, her son’s room spans the super hero universe. A look around and you’ll find evidence of Superman, Spider-Man the Green Lantern and the Dark Knight, Batman!

 Jen had a blast doing his room. She drew the background and heroes by hand on to a projector sheet. “We used a projector to make the size proportional to the mural for all the heroes. The rest of the effects were done by hand.”

We especially love the comic book style word bubbles on the wall. From Kapow to Thwap, her boy is dolling out a super punch!

Because mom-to-be Jen loves owls, she decided to do an owl themed baby boy nursery for her son Colton. Her first challenge came when she discovered that everything owl themed for babies is made for girls and in pink. Jen forged ahead and made her own crib bedding, curtains and wall artwork.

“The beadboard is wallpaper that we put up and painted white with the beaded molding. Then we painted the top Navy Blue.”

Jen added inexpensive furniture that looked expensive and her own little touches. She made the curtains, crib skirt, mobile, lampshade, and art herself. “

“If you don’t know how to sew, use sewing tape and an iron! I made my own curtains and crib skirt and even fixed the lampshade. Use lots of fabric in different colors and prints to make it your own! We love the finished product!”

“My favorite nursery detail is the tree branch decal because it ties the whole room together.” Jen chose a giant tree branch decorated with little owls and placed it in the corner so that the branch is ‘hanging’ over Colton’s crib.

When Iraq War veteran, actor, motivational speaker and Dancing with the Stars season 13 champion J.R. Martinez and his partner Diana Gonzalez-Jones realized they were going to have a daughter, they set about preparing a very meaningful, personal nursery for little Lauryn Anabelle Martinez, who was born on May 2.  Two of the main elements in the nursery – the room’s floors and furniture – are American-made products, which is quite fitting given J.R.’s role as an American hero and an inspiration to millions of fans across the country. Based in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, Little Crown Interiors is a highly specialized interior design firm focused solely on nursery and child spaces.

Lauryn Anabelle’s crib, dresser and changing station were all manufactured in North Carolina by Young America, a premiere infant and youth furniture brand that is committed to providing parents with the safety and quality that accompanies domestic production. J.R. and Diana engaged Little Crown Interiors, a Los Angeles-based design firm specializing in infant and children’s spaces, to lead the nursery design process, and the team felt Young America’s Mix collection, which offers sleek, contemporary lines and 120 finish combinations, best complemented their plans for the space.

Martinez and Jones selected Oilo’s Freesia crib bedding, an Oilo glider and pouf for their new nursery along with a coordinating Oilo diaper change pad and topper to help add a finishing touch to the room. “We absolutely love our Oilo glider! It is one of our favorite pieces in the room and has such a unique cool design that is actually very comfortable. Coupled with the very pretty design of our Oilo Freesia bedding, both are standout pieces that truly make our dream nursery extra amazing!,” said Martinez and Gonzales-Jones.

Desiring a darker finish for the furniture, the designers opted to pair a deep espresso tone with a warmer walnut accent color. This two-tone wood finish contrasts stylishly with the nursery’s light-colored walls, curtains and white-washed flooring while directing attention to the centerpiece of the room, which is a mural that honors the memories of the baby’s two namesakes — Diana’s sister Lauren, who passed away earlier this year, and J.R.’s late sister Anabel. The mural depicts the couple’s sisters as angels on either side of a custom-made sign that spells out the baby’s nickname, Belle. Belle’s nursery also includes hardwood flooring and an area rug from Shaw Floors, which is based in J.R.’s hometown of Dalton, Ga. In fact, J.R.’s first job was with Shaw and his mother also worked with the company for many years, so the inclusion of Shaw Floors products in the nursery served as a special way to further personalize the room by bringing a bit of Dalton to California.

Shaw is extremely proud of the fact that its carpet, hardwood, laminate and area rug products are made in the U.S.A., and because the company’s 24,000 associates view J.R. as “one of their own,” they are thrilled to know that he used Shaw’s Cape Ann hardwood and Posh area rug to enhance the beauty of his little girl’s nursery.

Remember this beautiful strawberry themed baby shower? Well baby girl has arrived and little Emily lives in a shabby chic girly nursery.

Mom Cheryl continued much of the pink throughout her daughter’s room. For the walls, she chose a dusty rose color which worked nicely with her antique-looking furniture for a vintage feel.

“I love soft, feminine, pastel colors, and my favorite color is pink.  I also love white because I think it softens the room and it can complement with any color.  Therefore, I think the pink and white color combination give the nursery room a soft and feminine look.”

The crib was the first thing that she fell in love with, and it also started the shabby chic inspiration. The oldest item in the room is the pink blanket (on the chair).  ”It actually belongs to my husband, which was his first blanket that his mother made for him. Now, we’re passing it down to our baby!”

Cheryl wanted Emily’s name to be the first thing that you see when you enter the room.  This scripted decal sticker was designed by mom herself.

The hot air balloons seem to move around in the air, just like real hot air balloons in the sky! ”Out of everything in the room, the mobile was the only thing that my husband picked out!”

Interior stylist Tonisha Ramona created this non-gender specific nursery for her client. While they already had one daughter, for their baby boy Aleksandar they didn’t want anything traditionally ‘baby’ or nursery-in-a-box. “I like to talk to the client and incorporate the many elements of his or her personality and lifestyle into the style that I create for them. That’s why I like to call myself an “interior stylist” instead of a designer.”

Already the baby’s nursery room, it was previously in the same blue color, but it only had the changing table, crib, and the queen bed which Tonisha removed to begin her design.

“I used a coral stripe because we didn’t want to do anything stereotypical and predictable.” The client wanted to keep the blue she had on the wall, but we wanted to create a non-gender specific color palette. When she knew she was going to add another color to the wall, Tonisha knew it had to be a color that would undo the fact that blue is often associated with boys. “Pink is the obvious choice if I were to neutralize blue but that’s too safe so I tried coral and it completely worked. The colors of the room are now baby blue, coral, white, grey and navy.”

When you first enter the room, the first thing to catch your attention is the crib which Tonisha affectionately calls the “baby care area”. “It actually makes sense too, because anyone who comes in a nursery should be drawn to where the baby is first before anything else.”

The artworks on the walls are fun and really give personality to the room. “The basketball net that I made was an interesting detail. I love how the basketball simply sits on the rim of the net as if it’s just about to go into it! It’s like a contemporary installation sculpture of some sort. It may exude that “lil boy charm”, but still, it’s just an accent. It doesn’t make the room lean toward a specific gender.”

Storage was a big part of the design concept for this nursery. Tonisha achieved this by using the walls and going upwards. “I always tell my clients that if they need more space, they don’t necessarily need a bigger room or a bigger house. All they need is a clever design and layout, and if the concept requires it, build up! Many people only think about the floor plan when in the middle of a space dilemma. You would be surprised to see how much room you will have and how much clutter you can put away when you design up.”

And baby boy will use this room long after his crawling days are over. The crib can be turned into a bed. So as baby gets a little older, he can still sleep in that crib/bed. “When he gets to be around 5 or 6 years old, they can get rid of the changing table and actually put a twin-size bed horizontally in between the two storage units. Simply layer it with pillows and now you have a daybed set up as a bed for your 5-6-year-old boy. I always strive to create a room that would give my clients a return of their investment in every way.”

While mom Jennifer from A Jennuine Life knew she wanted Hadley’s nursery to be aqua blue and orange with other accents, the color combination evolved when she found the fabric for the quilt with orange, blue, green, black, grey and white.  “We knew we were having a girl, but I’ve always liked orange and knew I could make a cute nursery for a girl without it having to be pink. Use fabric for color and inspiration – it’s easier to match paint colors than to find the perfect fabric to coordinate with paint.”

Jennifer painted most of the walls a pale grey and two accent walls in aqua blue. While the bird and tree decal is a focal point on one wall, there is a nature-themed alphabet wall art to draw your eye to the other. “The alphabet wall art was a really simple project that had a huge impact.  Some jute twine, a few nails, some mini clothespins and about ten minutes of effort and it was complete!”

Using the fabrics she bought, she made a coordinating valance, a crib skirt, and changing pad covers.  For the rocker, she transformed a Craig’s List bentwood rocker find with bright blue spray paint. “I’m still working on a few details, like knitted birds to become part of a mobile to hang over the crib or changing table.”

One thing from her childhood in the nursery is the changing table/dresser was hers as a girl.  “Several years ago I painted it black and changed the knobs and it’s worked really well in both my daughters’ rooms.  I also have a birdhouse that my great-grandpa made that is up on the shelf.”

The inspiration for Avani’s beautiful room was a stunning zebra print her mom Kaitlyn found at Ikea. She played off the black and white throughout the room but kept a bright atmosphere with the blue and pink.

She used a bright aqua blue for the wall, allowing the black and white zebra pattern to really pop wherever it was used. She used it in her bedding and even in a graphic wall art print.

Kaitlyn advises that anything made of fabric you should make yourself. This includes bedding, curtains, changing table covers, and anything else you can purchase by the yard. “Not only can you get the exact design your looking for, but it is so much cheaper!” To create more room for her daughter’s closet, she used white sheer fabric for the doors and tied it off with hot pink.

Never wanting to forget what a blessing her daughter is, Kaitlyn chose an inspiration quote for Avani’s wall. It reads:

“Some people dream of angels, I hold one in my arms.”

To get a creative room like Avani’s, Kaitlyn also advises to never go the store brand nursery route. “Be creative.” Take a lot of ideas and pick and choose some aspects that will help you make it all your own.”

Autumn was only 2 weeks old at this newborn photo session by Jordan Weiland that took place in her nursery and home. Her big sister Peyton showers her with love and kisses and just adores her.

Autumn’s nursery is peach and coral and full of blooming flowers, the bold and vivid colors of what we think will turn out to be her favorite season.

Steve Dalgetty from  An Endless Pursuit shot little Joseph as a newborn at only four days old. “He was such an angel.” Even though mom and dad are avid football fans, with dad himself being a high school football coach, the mood and environment of the shoot was anything but tackles and unnecessary roughness.

Joseph’s nursery room was decorated in soft creams and dreamy blues and greens. The main feature is the alphabet scrolling across his nursery wall. Letters painted in green, blue and browns add a masculine touch to his warm haven.

Baby’s Breath Handmade provided the beautiful green jersey wrap that just happened to match the colors in mom and dads bedroom and made for a snuggly cocoon for little Joey to settle in, and made for great pictures.

When it came to designing a nursery for her daughter, Brooke choose a cheerful color palette that was bright and fun and would work for both genders without being neutral yellow. “My design style is bold, clean, and colorful. I like furniture with simple lines that really let the color shine. The nursery was the one room where I really got to express this fully. When we moved into our home, we grabbed a handful of swatches and played around with them on the walls. We both loved how rich the color was. There’s a lot of green in the teal, and it changes depending on the light. We lucked out with the lime, which was a can of paint we already had. From there I brought in white to give the eye a place to rest.”

While this room started with the wall color, re-purposing Grandma’s old cabinet TV was where the fun came in. “We ripped out the TV components and added a shelf. I painted the interior with a lighter shade of the wall color (Behr’s “Winter Surf”) and the outside with a custom-mixed lime color that I had tinted for a bedroom when I was a single girl in an apartment.” Fabric also played a big role, from the Amy Butler lime dots she recovered Grandma’s rocker with and the Freespirit Joel Dewberry Deer Valley fabric on the duvet. “It’s a nod to my husband’s love of hunting without being overtly “rustic”.”

The room had already been painted in their chosen color, but they didn’t start on any furniture until after her first trimester. Brooke started with my neutral items, like the changing table and TV. Once they knew they were expecting a girl we started in on the more specific decor projects, including pink camo deer antlers, large paper flowers, and cute woodland creatures. With switching homes with about 6 weeks left in her pregnancy, it was pretty hectic by the end to get it all put together.

“It’s all very DIY! I built the changing table, nightstand, gallery ledges, and twin bed by hand. The TV and rocker were heirlooms I revamped, and the crib was a thrift store find. I saw the idea for an ottoman made from a galvanized bucket from a feature on Curbly, and found a way to make my own. Every piece in the room was thoughtfully made just for her. It’s all very special. My husband made a sign by routing out Charlie’s name in some cedar from my dad’s barn, created an antler mount with a pink camo twist, and my mom cut out the woodland creature art on her cricut for me to frame. I cut hearts out of maps featuring the towns my husband and I were born in, and created the crib art with some vinyl decals from Target and Hobby Lobby canvases. The only thing we bought and left untouched was the crib! “

“I’m in love with the fabric on the rocker and ottoman. Plus, they all belonged to my husband’s grandmother who raised him, and sadly passed during my pregnancy. The rocker is our favorite heirloom piece. My husband was very close to his grandmother, and lived with her for some time. That rocker was used for late nights rocking my mother-in-law as a baby, then she turned around and rocked my husband in it. Now he rocks his own daughter. That chair has seen 4 generations. It just doesn’t get any better than that! This is a small way for Charlie to know her great-grandmother.”

While many parents use lanterns in a cluster as a crib mobile, Brooke used them in a vertical line like a light installation. “That was actually all my husband! I had them draped initially, but he thought that hanging them directly from the ceiling in the corner would have more impact. He was definitely right!”

There were compromises along the way. Brooke’s biggest challenge in creating Charlie’s nursery was getting her husband on board with the colors! “My vision is normally pretty ‘out there’ and it’s a hard sell sometimes. But all I do is tell him to trust me (as well as do all the work!) and I get that very satisfying, “You were right…” at the end!”

Mom-to-be  Ashley knew she wanted to do an argyle wall no matter what for her baby’s nursery, but that was her only solid plan. “I was rather positive I was having a boy, so I actually had a boy’s nursery all mapped out in my head before we found out the gender. Luckily, figuring out a nursery for a girl took me no time at all.” As a graphic designer, Ashley describes her design style as an edited classic modern. She knows the value of white space, and tries to reflect that into her style. “Audrey’s nursery is just a more youthful approach to my design philosophy.”

As soon as you enter Audrey’s room, your eye is immediately drawn to the painted yellow and green argyle wall. An argyle sock was Ashley’s inspiration for it. “I’ve always been a fan of green and yellow, plus I figure in several years she’ll want a pink or purple room – so I can do girlie then. Originally, I wasn’t going to add any pops of pink in the room, but after receiving numerous pink baby gifts I realized that was unavoidable. I’m happy I changed my mind, because I love the tiny pops of pink in her room.” Once the color palette was set and the wall done, it made her other design choices rather easy. “If it didn’t look good with the wall or didn’t fit into the color palette, I wasn’t putting it in the room.”

The glider and ottoman set are from BuyBuy Baby and were the big splurge, coming in at $600. “When I found this quilt pattern online, I knew it was a must. I am obsessed with houndstooth, and thought a simple and timeless quilt would be the perfect way to display that love. The houndstooth quilt pattern was $7.50, and I had that made.” The beautiful star above the crib was a college graduation present from Ashley’s parents. While it’s been in a lot of rooms, it is a perfect addition for Audrey’s nursery. The tiny penguin Ashley simply had to get it. “I can only hope that Audrey inherits my love for penguins or else there will be a lot of homeless penguins in several years.”

To jazz up the changing table wall, Ashley created custom canvas wall art to coordinate with the other colors in Audrey’s room. “Doing something like this is extremely easy! Paint the canvas white or whatever you want the background color to be. Then use painter’s tape to set your pattern. Once you peel the tape away, you’ll probably have some touch-ups to do – but it’s totally worth it. I got the canvas and paint at Michael’s Black Friday sale, so I spent $30 on this entire project. The most rewarding part is that Audrey loves looking at it.”

Don’t you love Audrey’s first Picasso paintings? “I wish they were real! I got them off posters.com and then bought some fun green frames from Michaels. I love that these pieces are playful without being babyish. Plus, Audrey loves the contrast.”

As Ashley looks around the room, she sees many items that were hers as a child. The figurines, piggy banks and some of her husband’s old blankets have been incorporated into Audrey’s room. “It means a lot being able to share these items with her. The most special are probably the Around the World Precious Moment dolls on the Expedit shelf. I remember the effort I went through to collect these. I think I have 10 total, but I decided to only display two of my favorites. The rest of in a box in her closet.”

Judging by this description, it’s no surprise that her baby girl will have a room full of frills and lots of pink. With shabby chic decorative touches invoking a feeling of calm, Jenna can already imagine rocking her baby-to-be in a comfy chair close to the window as she watch the Minnesota winter turn into spring.

Parents of multiples face some unique challenges when designing a nursery.  In addition to needing two of many items, having a baby of each sex can leave you stumped when making décor decisions.  This nursery designed by Dina of Honey + Fitz is perfect for the chic parents of twins looking for a nursery that is beautiful, functional and gender neutral but does not sacrifice style.

I think the ceiling is one of the most overlooked areas of the nursery. Babies spend lots of time on their backs so why not make it interesting? This subtle star wallpaper is beautiful without being over stimulating. Instead of the traditional mobile, I would install one of these gorgeous Moravian star pendants over each crib. Make sure to put them on a dimmer and watch them cast a completely captivating light show. Do the same with these pierced tin lanterns over the changing table. The traditional quatrefoil pattern is repeated throughout the room as are the bright colors Morocco is known for. And of course, twins require all hands on deck so double the comfortable seating is in order.

As soon as the nurse said, “it’s a girl!” Samantha Foster and Jonathan Ivy thought their heads were going to pop with excitement, thoughts and planning! They found out they were having a girl on a Thursday and flew to Europe on Friday to start their decorating adventure!It was also while in Paris where they decided they would name their little girl Emma. “Right then and there, things went crazy. Although I must admit I feel like I did a good job budget wise, I think I did an ever better job creating a pink Parisian paradise.  Like seriously, this room radiates pink!  It is so happy in Emma’s room!” French rustic chic is how Samantha describes her home and she wanted Emma’s room to be an extension of that, something that blended but still remained true to her femininity.  They also did not want a baby themed room, we wanted something that would suit a little girl yet remained classy.

The inspiration for design came from Samantha’s love of all things girly and her husband’s European heritage.  “Pink has been and always will be my favorite color so when I heard we were having a girl, I knew this could be a main color in our pallet.  My husband is a lover of art and his family extends back into Europe which has made us a fan of the culture and design there.  Europe is so sophisticated!  Even their cartoon characters are void of the bright primary colors we see in the USA and have a beauty about them.  So with this being the case, it was a no brainer that our trip to France would indeed set the tone for this room.  And after just a couple days of being in Provence we found the four pieces of art in an outdoor market while shopping in the rain and knew we have our foundation for the room!

“Europe as a whole is so inspiring!  Their outlook on life is so different from ours.  Most of the French carry a natural air of classiness about them therefore the items they create convey that same classy structure.  As seen in this room, items that are delicate in nature can beautifully describe something new and little.  We did not however want a literally translation of France…no Eiffel towers although we did place the scooter on the wall which I just adore.” Parisian touches are everywhere in this sweet palace. The hanging balloon and ballet shoes were both brought back from their trip to France.

They custom designed the pink bedding at be-dazzled. “Be-dazzled played a big part in helping me get this room designed.  I had my theme and knew where I wanted to go, I needed help finalizing and implementing and they did just this.  They helped me set the four colors to be used and worked with me to custom design the bedding, the rug, the chair, wall colors and more!” She brought in the art and the stuffed animal, explained the direction Emma’s room was going, what she loved about it and from there they drew up an actual sketch of the bedding. It gave her a clear vision on the bedding from where the ties would be to what the ruffled edge would look like. They then gave her a swatch set from all the fabrics they used to create the bedding so as she went forward in shopping, she had all my colors and textures handy.

The stuffed animal is named Jams and was one of the purchases for Emma while they were in France. “Jonathan though he was so cool and knew Emma just had to have him.  She loves him!” Also from France are the animals hanging on the back of the bed.  “They have the best colors over there.  No bright or florescent colors, just elegant neutrals.  They also have unique and cute characters that aren’t Winnie the Pooh.” After bringing these items back they designed the entire room around them.

The tissues poms were specifically made for one of Samantha’s baby showers.  After the baby shower, she asked if she could keep them for Emma’s room and they said yes. They brought the puffs, lanterns and big flowers over and were hung over the glider.  “I LOVE them!  Not only were they hand made with love, they add a little spice to the room.  When Emma has a bottle she loves to look up at them!”

The collage of four drawings is by a French artist they found in a small outdoor market in Europe about a love story between a boy and a girl.  They brought them back and framed them through their framing company, a wonderful perk of being a photography team. On Emma’s changer is a pair of French ballet shoes her grandmother Mimi (Jonathan’s mom) bought her in remembrance of when she was a ballerina year ago. The tea set in the blue case was Samantha’s when she was a child. There are knobs that Samantha thought would make the dresser so delicate looking.  “I purchased those about four years ago holding them for someday when I had a daughter!”

The book and toy shelf, which was a hand me down garden rack, has a stack of books on them made up from all over the world.  “She has books in French and Spanish, several books about a characters & children named Emma and books we used at our showers as “guest sign in books”.  Out with the white lined books to be signed and in with nursery rhymes and stories with space your dear family and friends to write notes to Emma on.

The paper
chain was another item from a baby shower made by Jonathan’s parents.  It was hanging above the dessert bar and Samantha had vision for this and the Emma sign for her girl’s nursery.  “I have always like the idea of having a drapery above her crib but didn’t like the weightiness of it, well this was the perfect alternative!  The paper just came from a craft store and was cut into strips and stapled together.  They were made about a foot too long so we just let them drape onto the floor.”

Each month Samantha and Jonathan take a picture of Emma in her chair with Jams beside her so that they can keep track of how she grows into a big little princess in her nursery palace.

When it came to designing her son Chase’s nursery, Cristi of Charm Home wanted it to be a room full of  little moments, just like her child’s life. In every corner of the room, she tried to create something special. Decorating her nursery since before she was pregnant, her design started out with all primary colors. “As I moved forward, it slowly evolved into orange and what I would call blue-mint. I’m so glad it morphed into what it is now.” She got a good start with the room by painting the walls in Rainwashed by Sherwin Williams.

As a designer, Cristi jumped at the chance to tackle creating her own child’s nursery room. After designing so many others for clients throughout the years, it was special to get to put her stamp on her own. Like many other parents, she put together an inspiration board of items she loved to form a cohesive design for Chase’s room.

Her journey to her bedding was so difficult, Cristi ended up designing her own. “I love designing bedding so it as only fitting that I designed Chase’s.” Thanks to a suggestion from one of her blog readers, she was able to get the fabric that she really wanted for his crib skirt and pillow at an unbelievable deal.

That wasn’t the only DIY project Cristi put her stamp on. The most buzzed about is the custom painted rug. When she found out that a West Elm she originally wanted was going to break her budget, Cristi opted for her own DIY version, hand painting a run from Ikea in her matching orange hue with a funky design.

“I never intended to use the Serena & Lily glider that was on the inspiration board, but I wanted to find one similar to have slipcovered.  After looking and looking on Craigslist, I had almost given up on ever finding one that was the style I wanted and within my price range. Then someone emailed me to let me know that they wanted to sell the glider they had used with their children.  I was so excited, especially when I saw how pretty the form was. It was just what I was looking for.” She reupholstered it in a pre-washed ivory linen for the slipcover so that she could easily throw it in the wash and bleach it clean.

“I think my favorite details are the vintage style coffee cups that spell his name. They came from his baby shower. The other is the bird mobile over his crib.” The bird mobile was the very first thing that Cristi bought for the nursery, months before she was even pregnant. “I knew I would use it whether I had a girl or a boy.”

The gallery wall consists of art from Etsy as well as two of Cristi’s husband Billy’s artwork he made when he was a little boy is included in the gallery wall above Chase’s crib. “It was so special for us to be able to use those pieces.” The little painted swallow was gifted to me from a dear artist friend.

As a designer, Cristi of Charm Home  jumped at the chance to tackle creating her own child’s nursery room. After designing so many others for clients throughout the years, it was special to get to put her stamp on her own. Like many other parents, she put together an inspiration board of items she loved to form a cohesive design for Chase’s room. She choose items from stores like West Elm and brands like Serena and Lily to put this inspirational board together. She accented it with items she already had and bold colors and patterns.

Lisa of Wicked & Weird designed this fun, bright and unique room to be just like her son, Will. We’re familiar with her creative design sensibility as we featured her baby Cameron’s nursery earlier this year, a cheerful and bright room. So it’s no surprise to us that her other son’s room is equally fabulous.

Lisa wanted to make a room from the beginning that looked nice to an adult, but that more importantly was fun and inspiring for my son. It ended up being a combination of heirlooms, vintage, and some new pieces that came together really naturally. “I like that it doesn’t feel like it was a big loud kiddie jumble/toy store or too matchy-matchy. Almost everything in here is sentimental or has a story behind it. Especially since we don’t have a lot of family living close to us, I like the idea of my son being surrounded by little pieces that can remind him of how many people out there love him.”

Her favorite component of Will’s room is the red bed. It was her brother’s growing up, and her dad got it from his uncle, who had it hidden up in the attic for ages. “It is obviously hand made, as all the spindles are different shapes and sizes, and I love the image of a father or grandfather back-in-the-day spending hours making it for a child. It took me hours to paint it, but it seemed to be crying out for red. My dad tells me it is mahogany, so maybe someday I will strip it down to the wood.”

Lisa’s mother-in-law made the alphabet wall hanging (“as well as many quilts, pillow, sheets, a Halloween costume – she is a whizz and I am sure if she didn’t live 4 hours away by airplane she would make their clothes too!”) “My Aunt sewed the Raggedy-Ann doll for me when I was about 7 or 8. And I did my bit by designing the alphabet poster and his portrait gallery of some of his closest stuffed friends. We found the dresser on the curb, brought it home, and painted it white.” The sweetest comment Lisa has received about the room was from someone whose taste she really admires, “and she said that it was timeless and obviously made with love.”

For others in the design process, Lisa advises to not immediately take out all the ‘baby’ things – you would be surprised at what your little one has noticed in their room and gotten attached to. And make sure their is lots of room for the things they love – in my case, books, cars, and stuffed ‘friends’. It makes me happy to see him having so much fun in here.

Nursery room challenge: How do you inject your personal style without painting the walls or doing anything permanent to the room? This was the obstacle facing Amanda and her husband as they moved from a rental only three months before baby Westley’s due date. “We wanted a modern nursery with an urban edge, and with the help of my brother, an aspiring interior designer came up with just that.” While surfing the web, I was most drawn to kids rooms that were bold, graphic, and colorful and she translated this idea perfectly for her son’s room.

Since they were having a boy, blue was a natural accent color, but they wanted something “punchy” too. They chose strong colors of black and orange as an ode to their beloved San Francisco Giants, and accented it with a bright aqua blue.

Most of the items were purchased from big box stores and with a little creativity were able to achieve a custom look. By using a simple yet bold font, they achieved a cohesive graffiti look throughout the entire room. “My husband is a huge sneaker collector and we wanted to find a way to include his personal style into the room as well. The words we chose describe my husband’s urban street wear style. We customized two simple Ikea dressers using sheets of black vinyl wall decals. We chose a simple, bold font and cut out each letter by hand.”

By bringing in color through bold artwork, textiles, and accessories while keeping the furniture clean and simple, they achieved their goal. Their urban style and love of the bay area was brought in through various DIY projects which include painted chevron curtains, a customized Ikea dresser, and a mural of the San Francisco skyline.

Their biggest indulgence was the Melissa and Doug Giraffe. ”In most cases, I would not consider spending $100 for a giant stuffed animal.  However, my husband found the giraffe on Amazon for way less and bought it as a surprise for me.” How sweet!

Amanda’s favorite item in the room is the paint chip mural, which features all of Amanda’s favorite Bay Area landmarks and makes a great focal point in the nursery. The idea for it came from DIY paint chip art Amanda had seen on Pinterest. “My brother and I brainstormed a list of landmarks to include and he sketched a basic design.  Then we were off to all the local home improvement stores to pick up the paint chips. He meticulously cut out each shape by hand before attaching to a large sheet of plywood. Measuring over two feet tall and almost five feet wide, it took my brother weeks to assemble and is truly a labor of love. It brings in just the right amount of whimsy for this modern nursery. Best part of all, the paint chips were free!”

“I love how the nursery is as much of a reflection of my husband and I as it is a special place for our baby.  Many of the design elements throughout the room represent our own adult interests and hobbies in a fun and whimsical way.” Thanks for sharing Westley’s amazing nursery with us Amanda!

Over a year later when Kristen still hadn’t gotten around to making this extra room in her home pretty.  Other than refinishing the floors and hanging some window shades, she hadn’t even painted the walls in this room.  This was her starting point for creating son Tate’s nursery room. She didn’t really have a “budget” per se, but the desire to be as economical as possible and still create a nice space that could grow with our baby.  After a few weekends of tackling a board and batten wall treatment, months of shopping for baby furniture and accessories, and creating some personalized statement pieces, the space had quite a transformation.

 Tate’s room is a bright, fresh space with a classic feel, a bit of whimsy and an interesting color palate that Kristen could build on as he grows. She chose aqua and orange, and ended up with a nice mix of blues that compliment each other as well as contrast with the bright hits of orange in the space.  White is a huge component in the room as well, with a large circular shag rug providing softness and texture, and a white micro-velvet rocker/glider giving her the perfect place to spend (a lot!) of time.

“I like this crib for its clean-lined, modern feel.  It has a nice drawer for storage as well. I considered starting my own line of nursery/kids bedding in response to the fact that there is little out there in terms of classy nursery linens that are affordable.  I purchased the entire “Ben” from Serena & Lily bedding set for 70% off in a sale this summer. The art piece at the end of the crib is a letter-pressed “T” I found, and framed in a turquoise frame that I had previously been using in another room.  I added an orange background to make it pop and tie in with the room.”

“I had a great time making the map letters above Tate’s crib—they are made with vintage maps that show where my husband and I are both from.”  The map letters sit perfectly above the board and batten, and tie in all of the shades of blue in the room.

Much of Kristen’s time is spent in this the comfy rocker-glider.  She brought in this Eileen Gray table from her living room for a touch of modern glam.  “This is for me, because let’s be honest, I care way more about how this room looks than the baby does right now!  I love the pattern on the ottoman pouf, and it’s the perfect height and softness as a foot rest for me.  Plus, it will function well as Tate grows and wants things to pull himself up on.”

The mahogany bow-front dresser was given to Kristen by her in-law, and it’s been in several rooms before this one.  She was originally going to paint it, but just couldn’t cover up the rich wood that she loved so much.  It was a great move because it looks great in Tate’s room and is a nice juxtaposition with some of the more modern elements.

The “art” above the dresser is simple framed letter-press greeting cards that are the right color tones for the room.  To make the images stand out more, Kristen wrapped a couple of the frames in natural linen.

The completed drapery panels were a project she thinks turned out particularly well. “My mom came to the rescue and finished sewing them after the baby was born and I was in no shape to complete the project.  It was her idea to add a narrow piece of orange grosgrain ribbon.  The panels are mostly decorative, but I love the pattern on this fabric and how it ties in with the other elements.”

The built ins were original to the house, and are perfect in Tate’s room.  The countertop is the right height for a changing table, and there’s lots of surface area for diapers, supplies and essentials to be within easy reach.  Lots of open shelving is great for storage and display, and Kristen painted the backs of the shelves a soft aqua to offset the brightly colored accessories.  With drawers and more storage below, this unit can evolve as Tate grows, providing space for all of his “stuff”, and hopefully giving him some incentive to keep things neat and organized.  “I’m looking forward to the room growing to fit Tate’s needs, and am excited for the next decorating project!”

Lauren from Crave Indulge Satisfy threw one of the first  baby showers that we featured. It’s only natural that we feature her baby’s nursery that she’s ready to pop with her first child, a son to be named Sam. She just finished his modern teal blue, lime green and orange nursery this past weekend, and we’re so proud of the job she did, we’re showing it off.

Bright and vivid colors are everywhere in Sam’s room and the three main hues are coordinated together perfectly.

To bring pattern into the room, Lauren used chevron patterned curtains in bright lime green. Don’t you love how they add so much color to her glider area?

By using lime green fabric to cover her changing pad, Lauren didn’t miss the opportunity to turn something boring white into a color pop. Hope it’s machine washable! Even her stacking rattle matches the color palette of the room! And the artwork in the room from the little crab over the changing table to the alphabet art bring color to their respective areas along with a modern feel.

When it comes to design, Lisa of Wicked and Weird loves clean but eclectic design. She likes to create cozy, relaxed rooms where people feel comfortable to put their feet up but also can admire that thought went into their surroundings.  While the rest of her house is mostly neutral colors, she seized the opportunity to do her baby room in fun bright colors on a budget of $500.

Since she did not know her son Cam’s gender while decorating, she tried hard to keep the nursery gender neutral.  “I was inspired by the yellow wall color and the big windows in the room, making it so sunny and cheerful. I wanted to create a room that felt warm and happy, like an afternoon in the sun.” She incorporated orange as well because it was so gender neutral. “It also was very different from the green and blue room I had done for my older son.”

Being a small room, you sort of take it all in at once upon entry.  The crib is right in front of the entrance to the room and the windows are the main focal point.  Lisa said that outside there is a lovely tree outside that fills the windows with color and movement through every season. “I love rooms that slowly unfold themselves to people – the kind where you just want to walk around and have a peek at everything.  The elephant painting that I did for the room (Cameron contributes a smudge in the corner).  And I asked my in-laws to blow up one of my favorite photos of my husband and his brother when they were very young.  My husband and his brother are very close, and we are hoping our two boys have as tight a friendship!”

The mobile hanging above Cam’s crib is one of Lisa’s favorite details. It was originally intended to be a photo mobile, but instead of putting photos in, she clipped in Japanese paper cranes that a friend of hers had given at the baby shower.  “I love that it is meaningful as well as captivating for Cam.  I hung in on a long line of fishing wire so it would be at the right height above the crib.”

Lisa made a couple of prints with Cameron’s name using a free animal font she found online.  “I found a few Czech movie posters online that I printed out to reference my husband’s Czech background.  The art that took the longest was the alphabet print that I designed for the room, using those specific colors.  I am very happy with how it turned out!”

Lisa found one of her biggest challenges was putting all the adorable baby things back on the shelf if they didn’t go with the simple vibe of the room and the colors she was working with.  “Because there is so much adorable baby stuff out there!”  The furniture configuration was also a bit of a challenge due to the position of the window, the radiator and the closet.  “Having the crib right in front of the entrance to the room is not my first choice, but there really were not many options.”

As Cameron is her second child, Lisa did think of how it would transition as Cameron grew much more than when did when decorating his big brother’s room.  “It is really easy to forget that the baby stage doesn’t last very long when you are full swing into nursery decorating!  The crib transitions to a toddler bed, and we can swap out the images in the frames or put new things up on the picture rails as he grows.  And the shelves are so versatile, you can really hide anything in those baskets, from receiving blankets to toy car collections!”

You would never know the budget to create Penelope’s beautiful nursery was what mom Emily describes as “Pretty much nonexistent.” With her husband finishing up his residency, money was incredibly tight.  By reusing all of the furniture from her first daughter, most of the crafty touches were made from materials that Emily of EmmyLizzy already had or things that she had thrifted.  “I’m a huge crafter and love to sew, so my fabric stash is a little out of control.”

Before this room was transformed into Penelope’s tranquil blue nursery, it was a really awkward room in Emily’s home.  The previous owners had knocked out a partial wall between two equal sized bedrooms to make a sitting room connected to the master bedroom, and some of her furniture overflowed into the adjoining room. “We never quite knew what to use it for – but it’s perfect for a nursery since we have room for all of the baby stuff, yet it’s still connected to our bedroom.”

The nursery for oldest daughter Phoebe was soft, light, and airy, and she really wanted to do something completely different for this daughter. While most would be scared of a deep blue wall color for a girl, the deep blue Behr pain in Realm is very soothing. “I think the color is my overall favorite part.  It’s such a bold choice from the paint colors that we usually use, and I’m so glad that we took a risk. But my husband still doesn’t like it!”

All of the cute little things around and on the shelves are either prints from local artists or thrifted goodies that Emily found long before she knew she was pregnant.  One of her favorite nursery details is the ABC crewelwork project.  The kit came from the blog Posy Gets Cozy, which was the first blog that she ever started reading and is still one of her favorites.  “My mother bought me the kit for a mother’s day present shortly after I found out I was pregnant, and I slowly worked on it up until Penelope was born.  It was such a fun, relaxing project.”

After seeing the doily clouds online, Emily admits, “I blatantly copied them. I just loved them so much.” The process was faily easy, sketching out some cloud shapes on paper, using the patterns to cut the pieces out of linen, sewing them together, stuffed, and hand stitched the doilies onto afterwards.

“I didn’t even attempt to look at bedding because I think bedding sets are absurd.  It’s recommended that bumper pads shouldn’t even be used anymore, so you’re basically paying an arm and a leg for a crib sheet and a crib skirt!  And usually the crib sheet is just a basic solid color. I love vintage sheets and the crib sheet was made out of one of my favorite sheets from my stash.”

Emily fell in love with the doily lamp after seeing a similar one on Pinterest. “I knew that I had to make this for somewhere in my house.  After I had made the doily clouds and the crocheted blanket with the doily appliqué, I figured I’d continue the trend by making the light.  Plus, I really needed a lighting fixture and all of the ones that I like were crazy expensive.  I used about seven thrifted doilies (1$ each)  and a lighting kit from IKEA, and the grand total came to about $12!” Don’t you love the patterns is casts on the wall when it’s the only light in the room. It’s breathtaking!

Since it’s only a nursery for a short time, Emily advises others to take risks with color and have fun with décor.  “I also try to include items that will be able to grow with the baby – that you can incorporate into their big kid rooms, and that they’ll still want to showcase as a teenager and take with them to college.”

When it comes to her daughter Jane’s room, photographer Claire B describes it as ”soft, feminine, and airy with a bit of whimsy” It’s everything she loves. “I’m so happy with how things came together and it’s definitely the sum of ALL the parts that make this room what it is.”

The yellow patterned Thomas Paul Aviary fabric helped to set the tone of the nursery. “It’s important for me to have one defining design element in a room and these curtains definitely kept me on track.Once I had them up on the wall it was clear where the room was headed. The fabric adds texture and whimsy while also giving that modern, but not too modern feel I wanted.”

The “no sew” curtain panels that Claire handmade are definitely one of, if not her favorite decorative item in the room.  By doing the curtains herself, Claire saved a decent amount of money by forgoing a pair of Anthropologie curtain panels that originally inspired her…and she says actually love the ones she made more!

Do you love the wreath hanging on Jane’s door? This is an easy DIY project! Take an embroidery hoop or styrofoam circle and simply wrap it with yarn. To give it a more colorful effect, choose yarn with ombre shades to make it look like it was several colors without as much work. Then get some silk flowers or handmade fabric rosettes and glue them to the yarn circle. It’s an easy project that adds color, style and a personal touch to your baby’s room.

Like many moms in the design process, Claire often struggled with what to put on the walls of the room. There are so many options when it comes to art, but she didn’t want to put just anything in a frame. “For me, adding prints and art that are meaningful to me makes all the difference in a room.  From the art print of a Golden Retriever that is reminiscent of our dog Trooper, to the abstract watercolor print I painted with my nieces over Thanksgiving…everything has a story or personal connection…every piece makes me smile.”

And her struggle with wall decor didn’t end with frames!  Seeing beyond framed art and photos is something many parents struggle with. Claire pushed herself to come up with something more abstract. With the help of her husband (and inspired by the Aviary curtains) they came up with the idea of hanging a collage of bird houses above Jane’s changing table. It ended up being their unique take on a mobile. “This was such an inexpensive project!  Adding some high gloss paint to the roofs and bottoms of the houses gave them a more finished and contemporary look.  Jane loves staring at the blocks of color from below.”
