With the Oscars around the corner, movie night just isn’t complete without popcorn. Single-serving paper cones and a popcorn seasonings bar allow viewers to customize their snacks. Treat Cones are such a fun way to display candy and other goodies at a party. They’re easy to make and can be tailored to pretty much any party theme or color palette, so the sky’s the limit on the style!
Here are the DIY details:

You’ll Need:
gift wrap or other decorative paper like scrapbook paper
lollipop sticks
craft styrofoam sheets – approx 1″ thick
shallow tray or vase/container
candy/treats for the cones
candy/treats to cover the styrofoam
tape, glue stick & scissors
and of course, popcorn! (or other goodies)

Directions:
For the Paper Cones:
1. Download or create a template for the cones. (You can download the one we used here. It makes 5″ cones.)
2. Trace the cone template onto the paper, then trim out. Repeat as many times as you need.
3. Roll the trimmed paper into a cone shape, making sure there’s enough of a hole left in the bottom of the cone for the lollipop stick. Secure the cone shape with a piece of tape on the inside, and use the glue stick to make the outer edge lie flat.

To Arrange on a Party Display:
1. Cut a piece of the styrofoam sheet to fit securely within your tray or vase/container.
2. Place the styrofoam in the container, then insert the lollipop sticks into the foam, leaving a few inches in between the sticks to make room for the cones. (You can insert the sticks in neat rows or in a random configuration – whichever you prefer!)
3. Pour candy or popcorn on top of the styrofoam until it is completely covered.
4. Fill each paper cone with candy, popcorn, or another treat, then slide them onto the lollipop sticks.

When we got Aubrielle’s fairy  princess party in for our Feb/March Baby Lifestyles Magazine Issue from mom Shelley Smith, we absolutely flipped over her incredible favors that she gave out. “I took the cups, filled them with some of the crinkle paper and centered a ‘fairy favors’ sticker on the front. Then I used my scissors and carefully twisted the sharp end into the top of each lid to make a circular hole to put our little wand through.”

 ”Then I took some of my colorful gumballs and filled the cup to the top!”

“Next I took these inexpensive plastic wands, tied a small piece of yellow tulle around the handle.”

 ”Put the lid on, stuck the wand through the top and you’re done! How easy and cute are those!? To make eight of these little guys it only took a matter of minutes! Honestly the easiest party favor EVER!”

Melissa’s favorite detail of Grace’s prom party was the silhouette she created and affectionately dubbed, “Prom Girl.” A fan of the silhouette trend, Prom Girl served as inspiration for the party as she incorporated disco balls into the enchanted theme.

“I tried to use the “prom girl” in as much as I could.  My biggest project was making her.” Her pink skin sparkled with glitter and was topped off by a cute pink dress of tulle and ribbon. She ruled as queen of the night over the favor table Melissa set up. If you’re loving the beautiful ruffle backdrop, would you believe Melissa put shower curtains together for this romantic effect! Boas and feathers decorated the corners of the table while dangling disco balls adorned with ribbon bows danced in the light.

Prom princesses need pampering and bling to sparkle and each could be collected at the favor table. Melissa used her imagination to tie in the prom princess theme into each item for her party girls. Forget prom princess sashes—Melissa offered those—she got creative with the staples ever girl remembers of her prom experience. Each received a ‘corsage’ or paper tissue pom with an elastic tied to it so they could wear them on their wrists. Prom jewels were hot pink bracelets and each girl was a prom queen with their very own tiara. Why would you hail to the queen when you can ‘nail’ to the queen with your very own pink emery board.

Even the little boy guests got in on the action, receiving a top hat adorned with a sequined ribbon, a prom boutonniere, “Prom Wheels” (Hot Wheels), a prom king sash, a disco ball ornament, a sequined bow-tie and a “fancy glass.”

Sarah Chen had three requirements for her daughter Ellie’s first birthday party. 1) That it be held outdoors, 2) that it be pink, and 3) that it had a flag banner somewhere. When she teamed up with Linda Ly of Grand Soiree, the Anthropologie themed birthday party was off and running.

Linda took the Anthropologie theme “to the moon and back” describes Chen. It started with the invitation with retail-esque packaging. Inside the outer mailing box an inner box was wrapped with twine and nestled in pink shredded paper. Ellie’s party logo was onto the box in whisper pink ink and then embossed with pink powder. The invitation itself was an eight-page catalog of a photo shoot of a beautiful model…the birthday girl herself.

When Linda and Sarah met up with Melody of Sweet and Saucy, they brought along a copy of Ellie’s invitations for cake design inspiration. “I trusted in her talents completely and let her imagine something up for Ellie’s main cake and I have to say that I LOVE what she created.” The top layer was pumpkin cake with a cinnamon cream accent and the bottom layer was a candy bar creation: white cake with a layer of chocolate and a layer of peanut butter cream. Red velvet cake lollipops covered in white chocolate were a delicious bite-size dessert option.

Sarah’s favorite flower is peonies, and Carissa of JL Designs didn’t disappoint with big, lush, vibrant coral peonies. To compliment the flowers and color of the day, sparkling raspberry lemonade was served for the guests.

Fabulous friend of Baby Lifestyles and mommy product tester Stacy F. loves going all out on parties for her son, Logan. For Dylan’s first birthday party, all his guests started their engines! From black-and-white checkered flags and racecar centerpieces to a car-inspired cake, it was nothing but green lights for this little speed racer! Upon entering Dylan’s race track house, tall ‘stop light’ floral topiary trees of red roses, yellow daisies and green orchids let guests know they were coming up on a party.

One look at the kids’ table and you knew you were at the race track. A black-and-white checkered table cloth marked by orange cone-shaped cups led racers to their place, where each setting was made of a steering wheel placemat. The napkin rings were made of engine hose clamps topped with a toy Dylan racecar driver.

Both drivers and the pit crew filled their tanks on mini cheeseburgers topped with checkered flags and racing tire wheel macaroni and cheese. Butter cream frosted cupcakes topped with racecar wheels were offered as dessert as well as car-shaped sugar cookies in red, yellow and blue.

What’s a party without a cake? Dylan’s tiered birthday cake had twisting roads of fondant and cars racing down the side. A checkered flag topped off this fun racing confection.

Lindsay McGarity held a baby shower at her mom Lisa Morris’ home in honor of her best friend Victoria Netherton and her baby boy James. Being big James Taylor fans, “we all started calling him ‘Sweet Baby James,’ McGarity said. The blue and chcolate brown theme began with paisley and polka dot print plates and napkins that Lisa found. She carried the colors throughout the day.

Host Lindsay is quite the crafter, creating both the welcome sign and invitations for the day. “I made an inexpensive welcome sign for the front porch by decoupaging scrapbook paper onto a wooden circle and stamping the letters. I distressed it by smudging some paint around the edges.” Lindsay created the invitations digitally, printed them on cardstock and backed them with the paisley patterned paper. The invitation read: “Shower the People You Love with Love…Join us for a Baby Shower in honor of Victoria Netherton and Sweet Baby James.”

“The island centerpiece was easy to make, and it made a huge statement,” said Lindsay. She created it by sticking store-bought branches down into glass pebbles poured into a tall container to anchor them. “We strung ribbon through inexpensive ornaments, such as baby bottles, carriages, and pacifiers, and hanged them from the branches.”

She also made three little baby blocks by covering Styrofoam with patterned scrapbook paper and stamping the baby’s initials on one side, then ABC, 123, etc. on the other sides. “I distressed the edges with paint. My friend was able to take them home with her after the shower to add to Baby James’ nursery shelf.” The punch was a frothy blue to match the theme. A blue rubber ducky to float in it for added effect.

Various games were played throughout the day, but Lisa said the most fun was playing ‘The Cotton Ball Game’ (pictured). “Two guests (or more) at a time are blindfolded and try to spoon cotton balls from the bowl on their lap into the bowl held on top of their head. They only have 30 seconds to get as many in as possible. It’s pretty tough since the cotton balls are almost weightless on the spoon and it’s very funny to all the other guests who can see that they are scooping up nothing but air most of the time!”

“My Mom, Sister, and I enjoy making these favor boxes (left) to give out to guests during the holidays or parties we host, so we knew they’d be perfect for the baby shower! We fold patterned scrapbook paper to form two boxes that fit together. We filled them with blue and brown M&M’s and other small chocolates, then tied with a ribbon. Guests picked them up on their way out.”

The Mother of the Mom-To-Be, Peggy Looney, ordered the cake and petite fours from a local bakery, and they did a beautiful job mimicking the pattern on the plates and napkins and it tasted wonderful, too!
