Evelyn’s sweet first birthday party was beautiful with yellow birds and creative paper flowers. Her parents and Aunt put together a dazzling traditional Korean dol with all the elements feminine for their little princess. Evelyn, which means “little bird” in Latin origin. The day of her birth was filled with celebration and heartache for her mom Mayelene. “During her initial check-up, her physician noticed an unusual heart murmur, which turned out to be a congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). We’re told that she would require an open-heart surgery in her 6 months of age. It was one of the most trying times in our lives.” Thankfully when her 6 months came around, Evelyn had her heart surgery and was successfully repaired. “She recovered fairly quickly. We’re very blessed with such a brave little girl and love her very much.”
Because of what Evelyn had to endure with her surgery, I wanted her 1st birthday to be very symbolic and special. This was not only a celebration of Evelyn’s 1st birthday, but also a reflection on her journey to recovery. Hence, I wanted to integrate “birds” & “hearts” for her dohl theme. Also, I love trees & nature, so I wanted to marry all 4 elements together. After doing some research, I’d envisioned birds and hearts hanging down on a tree. I wanted everything to flow around this concept.
Almost everything was DIY by mommy and Auntie Ellen of Sky Meadow Place. We particularly love their creation of a tree, displaying all the items and meaning from Evelyn’s doljabi ceremony.
Daisy topped cupcakes couldn’t be any cuter for this sweet little girl.
On the head table were wooden birds, craft bowls to place the fruits inside, and couple of nests. Mayelene rented two large manzantitas from Best Wishes florist to sit on each side of the head table. All the tablecloths were brought from her home or borrowed to add to the final look of the party.
After a quick change into her hanbok, the doljabi begins! What item will Evelyn choose.
She picked the tambourine! And this little girl loves to dance…we definitely got a musical baby here.
Thanks for sharing Evelyn’s beautiful day with us!
