A Family Goes Up and Away with a Hot Air Balloon Baby Shower

Some families were born to party. It certainly seems that way for incredible cake designer Jessica Harris. When her cousin Ashley was expecting Willow, her first baby girl after two boys, it was cause for this talented family to celebrate. Jessica got together with her cousin, creative graphic designer to Kim Harris, to design a baby shower to float Ashley over a cloud in a hot air balloon, much like the design she was working on in her sweet girl’s hot air balloon themed nursery. To give Ashley the day off, they called in their photographer cousin Jamie Zanotti to take some pictures. Does the talent in this family ever end?
Full of sweet and thoughtful DIY touches, everything at the shower was soft, vintage feeling and girly. Since it was the first little girl Ashley was having, everything was pink with a little blue thrown in for contrast.
Kim kicked the day off with her graphic design skills. She produced a gorgeous and girly hot air balloon invitation reading “up, up and away we go” with a puffy little cloud that was raised up to give the illusion of the hot air balloon floating literally through the clouds.
Kim created hot air balloon decorations based on a version of tissue paper lanterns by Martha Stewart, using pages from a book instead of tissue paper. She used paper lanterns for the base of the balloons, scrap book paper for the hot air balloon basket and bakers twine to tie it all together.
Originally, Jessica was going to just make some cupcakes for the shower, but once she saw the extraordinary invitation Kim created, she knew she had to step it up a notch. She decided to design a cake to go with the scenery Kim drew for the invitation. Inspired by great design, check out the lighter than air cake she baked for the occasion!
Being a talented family, everything at the baby shower was done in DIY style. From the cloud cookie favors to the suckers and sucker stand to the invitations and signage and food. The beautiful cake by Jess was truly the cherry on top of the cake….pun intended! It tied everything together.
Thanks so much Jess for sharing with us! Stay tuned to see baby girl Willow’s nursery which inspired this baby shower’s design!
