Vintage Comic Book Superhero Boy Nursery Reveal

When we asked Cristi of  Weeds to Wishes what her personal décor style she says it’s modern meets vintage, with clean lines and simple looks. But she mixed it up when creating this colorful comic book nursery for her son, Nixon.

Originally, she was thinking vintage owl theme for the room whether she  had a boy or girl. However, her husband insisted they were not “manly enough” and he brought up comic book heroes… “I hesitated but thought if it was vintage comic book heroes with more muted colors…then yes- I am in! People would just give us funny looks when I tried explaining the color pallet and theme of the room. I think it just didn’t seem “baby enough” for them. Everyone loves it now that they can see it.”

Cristi and her husband came up with the concept- but she gives credit to her mother-in-law, who has an amazing eye for décor and putting together fabrics and sewing. “Yes, we had our own personal decorator!” While finding the perfect bedding for this comic book hero room was easy, it was also time consuming. Mother-in-law, Evelyn, did all the sewing and custom-made everything except for the bed sheets.

Finding all of the superhero items and decor has been a slow accumulation, with Cristi creating most of what is there. “It is hard to find muted colors with superhero so we had to be creative.”

pop comic book paintings on the wall were actually created by Cristi. As a photographer, she used Photoshop to design the paintings and blended them with real comic books. She had them painted and her husband stretched them to save cost. “I really didn’t want “scary looking” superheroes so when we were choosing what to get- I was particular about what could go on the wall. I wanted them to seem happy and heroic- rather then angry and mean. I know that sounds silly, but I just wanted his room to be an environment of encouragement that he was surrounded by superheroes- not being scared to go to sleep at nigh.” She also had to make sure she added a touch of girl power with Wonder Woman. Cristi became a superhero herself, finding the muscles to put up the valance which was a challenge.

For other parents thinking about doing a strongly themed nursery, she advises to “not be afraid to do something even when you get weird reactions. Think of things that can convert into big kid rooms to save on time and money later. Create a space that you and your children enjoy spending time into together! Ignore what others think… Go with what you love.

A big thank you to Cristi for sharing her son’s superhero hiding place!

This is awesome! My only critic is that it would have been nice if you had stuck to one franchise instead of combining DC and Marvel. I do plan (if it’s ever my time to have a child) to do the room, whether boy or girl, in the superhero theme. Boys for a boy, girls for the girl. I really hope my time comes soon! :-) Thanks for sharing your ideas!
