Nursery Reveal: Delicious Colorful Candyland Nursery Room

“Once upon a time, King Kandy, the Imperial Head Bonbon and Grand Jujube of Candy Land disappeared.” Thus begins the magical journey of Milton Bradley’s classic Candy Land board game. The game was a fun memory of Sasha’s when she was little. When she learned she was pregnant with a girl, she remembered playing the game and thought, why not? “I am a firm believer that the little details truly are what bring a space together, so small details like polka dotted knobs and Candy Land game piece artwork were the perfect touches.”

Although a hairstylist now, in 2008 Sasha graduated from the Art Institute of Dallas with her BFA in interior design.  “I like to stay I graduated right at the wrong time with the economy in a slump, so I never really got the opportunity to pursue interior design, except in my kid’s rooms!  I could design kid’s rooms until I’m blue in the face!”

Being that her favorite color is pink, it was hard to resist making the room look like bubblegum exploded, but Sasha loved the idea of blue in a little girl’s room.  “Especially Tiffany blue!  You got to start them out early right?  It served as the perfect contrast to the candy striped ceiling.”

“Working in a theme matters a lot to me.  I work better using one.  It gives me a lot of avenues to branch off of.  Plus it is fun to see the look on people’s face when they see the mural.  Everyone has played Candy Land at least once, so it’s like bringing back sweet memories.”

“The details I love the most are the framed Candy Land game cards above the crib, the polka dotted knobs on the furniture and the bright colored candy in candy jars throughout Poppie’s room.”

The biggest DIY project was the mural which took a week to paint. “It was the largest mural I have ever done.  Since there are so many versions of Candy Land I used different characters from all the decades, making sure they were all “friendly, happy” characters. I was silly to wait as long as I did to get started with that.  Painting a mural at eight months pregnant is not something I highly recommend! The other large DIY project was the candy striped ceiling.  My husband and I used chalk lines and painters tape to customize the look.  The room is really small, only a 10’x 10’.  I needed something to draw the eye up so that is what made me think of the candy striped ceiling. It was a lot more work than I expected it to be, but so worth it!”

Shana’s biggest splurge was the bedding and drapery.  She found an amazing bedding designer on Etsy named Rocky Top Designs to customize the design. “I spent hours on the couch putting together a combination that would work and I’m really, really happy with the results. We had a great time customizing it according to the theme and I think it really makes the room by pulling the color palette together.”

Sasha also provides this simple yet forgotten piece of advice for other parents: Get great pictures of the nursery! “I knew I wanted really good photos and I have no clue how to work anything besides my phone camera, so I found a high school student looking to major in photography at college this fall.  He got great experience and I have fantastic pictures of Poppie’s Candyland room!” Thanks for sharing this delicious looking nursery with us!

    Hi there!

I LOVE THIS!! I am starting to try to design my little girl’s nursery and I feel like you took this right out of my brain. I am 5 months along, so I need to get everything together, but I can’t seem to find what I am looking for.

Where did you get the curtains? I feel like if I start with those, it can be a jumpoff for the rest of my finds :)

    Thanks!
