Nursery Reveal: Lime Green and Navy Modern Girl Room
Baby Lifestyles | Jun 10, 2011 | Comments 4

Once you bring baby home and their personality comes out, it’s not uncommon to see their nursery room differently. That’s why when their room transitions into a big kid room, the décor often changes. As mom Shelli of a la mode maven watched her daughter Kendall grow, she styled a more grown up version of her nursery, a pre-big girl room. “Her original nursery was the existing lime green mixed with blush and pops of hot pink. It was very sweet, but seemed a little baby to me, so I wanted her to have a room that worked for her as a toddler.”
The fun pops of color were inspired by a pair of Kelly green lamps Shelli found. She fell in love with the shape and texture of the straw shade and knew she could use one on the changing table and later in her big girl room. “I love how the Kelly green mixes in beautifully with the lime green. I think it gives the color palette some dimension and depth. The navy and lime combination is a favorite of mine. I find it classic, preppy and fresh. ” Later dark baskets were added to create a pop against the white furnishings.
Shelli saw the rug online and almost ordered it in hot pink piped in the lime green. “I thought it felt too expected and I wanted a departure from the pink. I thought, ‘who says a navy and lime green can’t be girly?’ It’s a classic color combination and one of my favorites. The floral pattern on the navy crib sheet adds some femininity back into the space.”
The crib and changing table were bought first as Shelli knew she wanted white furnishings for a clean crisp look. The glider, bumper and lime linen for the curtain panels came next. “The lime green mixed with white was born, all before we knew the gender. “The rest of the details fell into place after that 20 week appointment and gender reveal.”
“I knew I wanted an iron crib for an old school feel. I also knew that I wanted to go with white furniture basics for a fresh crisp feel to the space. The glider is great for late night rocks with baby, but has a club chair feel. No need for an ottoman, just use a stool! Mine came from a garage sale over 15 years ago, and has been upholstered in so many fabrics on so many occasions I’ve lost count. I repurposed a slipper chair from a guest room for extra seating and bought a changing table on clearance knowing that it will not stay in her room forever.
“I am a big believer in creating a warm and fresh space for baby with pops of color for visual stimulation without being too literal. In fact, the pillow on her glider was found in the clearance section of Home Goods. You certainly don’t need to find your nursery decor in a baby boutique.”
Shelli thinks that your walls should have a story to tell. “I love adding a dash of history in a room to ground the decor. In my baby’s room, it is right inside of the shadow boxes. These sweet little outfits were my husband’s baby clothes. I can’t wait to share them with our little girl one day when she is old enough to understand…and kudo’s to my mother in law, for keeping his baby clothing in PRISTINE condition. Though there is not enough room to display, we even have his original pram stroller in mint condition.”
Considering this is a transition already from her baby nursery, some thought process has already taken place as to how Kendall’s nursery will transition as she grows. “At this point, when the crib goes, I have a white toddler bed bought used from a friend and also an amazing lime green and white polka dot tufted headboard for a twin bed.”
One of my favorite nursery looks is one that matches the décor of the rest of the home. Small details for visual interest and stimulation for baby can occur within a beautiful ‘non baby’ décor. Take a departure from the traditional nursery décor. The end result is worth the journey and the effort!” Thanks Shelli for sharing Kendall’s nursery with us!
