Real Baby Shower: Cupcakes and Champagne with a Hint of Paris
Baby Lifestyles | May 06, 2011 | Comments 4

What is the definition of inconsiderate? Probably throwing a baby shower for a friend who has Gestational Diabetes and choosing the theme “Cupcakes and Champagne”. Amelia of Royal Heinous doesn’t think she’s insensitive–she did make
Gluten free cupcakes–plus, her friend Elizabeth Marie still loves her. “I love looking at cupcakes online and before mom to be was pregnant we frequently enjoyed Mimosas on my patio. Thus, ‘Cupcakes and Champagne’. It just so happened she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and I don’t like sweets.”
Initially the party’s inspiration came from Mommy-to-be’s bedding colors. “She used the Pottery Barn white bedding with pink scallop embroidered border. She’s also from Cut Off, Louisiana – where they have a very strong French heritage, so I tried to add in some Parisian elements as well. Plus she knew she was expecting a girl, so I knew there had to be lots of pink.”

First Amelia created the cupcake topiaries and the light pink fabric for the background. But her favorite part was the flower garland. “I saw the tutorial online and was in love with how fabulous it looked. I knew I had to try it – I mean, it is $1 for a tablecloth – and it was so easy! I just sat in the front of the TV with my daughter and we had at least eight of them done by the end of Diego.” Then she made the letter circles and visited a local flea market to find the candlesticks and flowery china.

The Champagne bar was an enormous hit. “We had labeled pitchers of Mango-Orange, Pineapple-Orange and straight Orange juice. Then we had the champagne in a metal bin to the side so they could mix their own concoctions. The ladies loved it – Pineapple/Orange was the biggest hit. I also had the pink and white striped straws and raspberries, strawberries and orange slices as garnish.”
As the shower was at 3pm, only desserts were served for the 30 guests. “I made mini-Champagne Cupcakes and Gluten free cupcakes. Then I purchased the Strawberry and Almond cupcakes from a local bakery. I had seen a lot of powdered donuts being used lately and then randomly found the pink snowballs at the grocery. We also had Strawberry Whoppers, chocolate covered pretzels and fruit garnishes. A Co-host brought the sweetest little baby bootie Petit-Fours and we were ready to send everyone into a diabetic coma! None of the desserts sugar free – I know, I am terrible! But honestly, Elizabeth Marie told me she was going to splurge for the shower and to not purchase anything sugar-free. I also think she mentioned that sugar-free wasn’t really a get-out-of-jail-free card for diabetics.” Sadly, Amelia only tasted a bit of the champagne batter that she made. Since she doesn’t eat sweets, she relies solely on her friends’ feedback. “And I am not sure how trustworthy they are when it comes to my baking.”

For Amelia, the most special moment was when Elizabeth Marie opened a little pink Feltman Brothers daygown. “Her Mother-in-Law had given it to her and had the best story about the gown. When she was pregnant with her oldest son (the Daddy-to-Be), she was positive it was going to be a girl. When it wasn’t, she saved the gown all of these years in hopes of him having a little girl. This 40 year old gown was still an absolute classic.”

Amelia had never done favors for baby showers before. But the co-host spent all night popping popcorn and stuffing them with pretty pink paper and tags that said ‘Ready to Pop’. Amelia’s advice for those looking to plan their own parties: “Start with a theme – then add color. Stick to the color scheme – it makes everything so much more cohesive. Oh, and always serve wine.” Or in this case, champagne! Thanks Amelia for sharing this beautiful party with us!
