Stylish Vintage Chic Boy Baby Shower

It all started with a stuffed giraffe. Inspiration for Erika of Small Shop Studio can be found everywhere. The idea for this beautiful baby shower started when she was asked by a mom to design a nursery scheme around an FAO Schwartz giraffe and a great David Hicks fabric. She paired it with toy blocks, antique vases, and Serena and Lily’s Rye Crib set and saw vision for the baby shower. She met with the future mom’s mom, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law who all loved the idea and understood Erika’s vision. “When doing a baby shower, it doesn’t need to be all bright and cutesy,” Erika advises. “It’s easy to add in sophisticated elements, and going vintage is a perfect way to do that.”

Even before the theme was picked out, Erika knew she wanted to include the vintage hobnail vases. They ended up being one of her favorite elements of the day. “The mommy-to-be had this exact situation in mind when she initially wanted to use hobnail vases for her wedding: that we’d be able to reuse the vases over and over again through the years for parties and showers. The flowers and vases really upped the class level of the whole event. And I love how it’s a boy shower but we were able to incorporate an element that’s really pretty.”

Since Erika owns her own company called Wardrobe Stationery, the invitation was a no-brainer. “Between putting together the nursery design and having the toy blocks icon as one of our standards, it was easy enough. I’m a big believer in running a consistent ‘look’ throughout an event, and obviously one way to do that is with a graphic/pattern and with color. But I try to avoid being too ‘theme-y’ and prefer to add hints while remaining true to a particular ‘style’ instead.  For example, it may have been overkill if we had gotten napkins with toy blocks on them, and made the cake a toy block. Instead, we used the color scheme and the vintage ‘look’ as a unifying element!”

The beautiful flowers were picked out by the mom’s mom and friend at the LA Flower Mart to pick up the gorgeous hydrangeas and arranged all the vases themselves. “I had designed the cake with the help of Amy at Vanilla Bake Shop, using that same pattern as a band atop a mustard yellow band. The cake itself was their Vanilla Lemon Berry flavor. It was so good! And the milk glass cake plate was a piece from the mother-in-law/hostess’ collection.”

The centerpiece of the gift-opening part of the shower was the brainchild of the mom-to-be’s mother-in-law. An antique cradle was used as the gift table and the mother-in-law bought baby bedding especially for the baby shower. “It is a piece that’s been handed down in the daddy-to-be’s family. I love what his mom and sister did with it!”

The DIY clothesline photo banner was something the mommy-to-be saw used at a wedding. Her sister-in-law thought it would be a great idea to do again. “It was totally personable. She did such a wonderful job with it.”

“I had asked my husband’s cousin to make custom sugar cookies. We commissioned her to make these toy block cookies that she designed. She’s made them in the past for other family events and they are always the best. She designed the toy block graphic to match our theme.” Everything looks picture perfect!
