Babycakes are the brainchild of Hillary Rubin, an accomplished real estate developer. With two boys in their twenties and two more children aged six and eight, a fifth child was out of the question, but Rubin wanted to keep baby items around. Feeling it was time for an alternative to the traditional gifts given at baby showers, Rubin was inspired by the presentation to gifts. “I love to give the best and make moms know she has everything that she will need at such a crucial time,” Rubin said of her cakes. “Not to mention they are a gorgeous way to create smiles.”

Babycakes are completely visually different from a typical diaper cake. “It’s all about balance and visual design,” Rubin says. “They are the difference between a Mercedes and a Chevy. Both are great, but they are serving different purposes. It’s great to have choices for all.” And what separates a Babycake is that there are no diapers. Appropriately named, a Babycake contains a generous assortment of exquisite baby items for baby. What looks to be a cake built of flowers are bundles of gifts that baby can use including baby clothes, toys, blankets, wash cloths, mementos and more. The cakes are then lavishly decorated with couture silk flowers, imported ribbons, and other embellishments and topped with an heirloom treasure like a silver spoon from Tiffany & Co or Barney’s gift card. Rubin’s favorite is a Jay Strongwater picture frame.

Babycakes pack such a perfect present punch, it’s no surprise that they have a celebrity following. Recent recipients of Babycakes include Marcia Cross, Julia Roberts Amanda Peet, Sheryl Crow and Charlie Sheen’s wife Brooke Mueller. American Idol winner David Cook even jumped on the bandwagon and gave one as a gift. The best party of giving a Babycake as a gift is it is a decoration in itself. They make delightful and creative baby shower centerpieces and even arrive smelling beautiful. They are the type of present you don’t want to unwrap because they are so beautiful to look at, and are sure to wow a mother-to-be.
